Summer Garden Maintenance Tips

landscaping trends

A beautiful landscape begins with knowing the proper maintenance tips.

Everything’s blooming, and the greenery couldn’t be better. There’s nothing like enjoying the fruits of all that labor. However, as you well know, a gardener’s work is never done. We can always see a few more things that need tending. Summer presents its own set of garden maintenance challenges. To make matters interesting, it may be hot, dry, wet, cool, cloudy, or sunny. There may be insect or disease infestations, or the sailing could be smooth. Regardless of what this summer may throw your direction, keeping up with your summer garden maintenance tasks will help you get the most out of your garden.

Top Tips to Keep your Garden in Shape

  •  Removing deadheads: removing spent flowers helps plants put more energy into flowering again. Annuals, and repeat flowering shrubs and perennials will offer more color, more often during the season if you deadhead.
  •  Be vigilant with pests: As you deadhead, weed, and water, watch for signs of insect and disease pests. The solution may be simple or complex, but the key to garden success lies in early detection and prompt, decisive treatment. Know, invite, and protect the good bugs in your garden. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on any treatments that may be necessary.
  •  Get rid of weeds: As plants fill out in early summer, if you’ve kept them weeded up to that point, they should begin to shade out most of their weed competition. It’s okay to slow down, but don’t stop weeding. One weed left to go to seed can cause much more weeding in the future.

Protect Yourself while Gardening

Through a prime time for gardening, the summer heat can have a negative effect on your health if over exposed. Use sunscreen on areas of skin that will be exposed to the sun. Also, apply mosquito repellent whenever you go out to work in the garden. Early morning and evening are when mosquitoes are most active so stay vigilant. Remember to stay hydrated, to take frequent breaks, and try not to stay in the heat for extended periods.
