Preparing For Spring Landscape Maintenance

It's almost time to prepare for spring landscape maintenance!

It’s almost time to prepare for spring landscape maintenance!

While it’s currently still winter, spring is approaching quickly, and it is almost time to start your spring landscape maintenance. Continue reading for tips on spring landscape maintenance to begin as soon as the cold weather ends and the spring sun is shining!

Clean Up From Winter

The first thing to do is to clean up your lawn from fall and winter. Your yard probably has a lot of cleaning to be done, between leaves, branches, and effects from snow and ice. Take the time to start cleaning your lawn as soon as the weather starts to get warm. You don’t want to clean too early, of course, as you may experience another snow storm this winter and have to clean the aftermath all over again.

Next, inspect your yard by examining trees, shrubs, and your garden. After months of little lawn maintenance, your landscape is likely in need of some maintenance to make sure it’s healthy. Check for any damaged branches on your trees, especially the ones close to your home. Now is a good time to make decisions on branches you want to be pruned or professionally removed before the spring. Also, inspect plant beds’ mulch levels and add fresh mulch if needed. The fresh mulch will help to keep the roots cool and last through the summer.

Irrigation System

As the weather warms up, you also want to check your irrigation system to ensure it’s in good condition. Test the system by turning it on and check for any problems, including leaking valves, missing nozzles, or clogged sprinklers.

Early spring is also a great time to test your soil, as you must check it has the proper pH balance and nutrients before starting any landscaping projects. Plants and flowers need to be planted in healthy soil with the right nutrients to grow. Take a sample of your soil to a local agricultural extension office, or purchase an at-home testing kit from a garden shop. This is a very important step to take before starting any projects, as you increase your chances of a successful growing season this spring.
