A well-maintained garden can make any home look beautiful, but the trick in having a beautiful garden is choosing the right plants. Before you start the process, you should know what to look for, the types of plants you can choose from, and what are your garden conditions. Does your garden get a lot of light or only a bit? A sun-loving plant won’t thrive in the shade, nor will a shade plant appreciate the summer sun. Knowing your conditions can help your garden grow and thrive for people to ooh and ahh over all summer long.
Plant light can be described in three ways: full sun, partial shade, or shade. A plant that is considered a full sun plant prefers at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. A partial shade plant will do best when there is about three to six hours of direct sunshine a day – no more, no less. A shade plant prefers less than three hours of sun per day, but be careful not to put it in a spot that is so shady, it can’t grow.
You also want to take mature size into consideration: a plant may be small now but could grow in both diameter and height. Does your garden have the space for a plant in its full maturity? If you are planting flowers in clumps, keep them far enough apart to allow for maximum growth. This will help them grow and flourish without tripping over the needs of the other flowers in the same region.
Once you determine the conditions of your garden, you can then begin to determine which plants specifically to get. Some flowering plants can require special care or several growing seasons before they really begin to flourish. If you’re looking for immediate results, consider transplanting plants that are still growing rather than growing them from seeds. Annuals only grow one season, whereas perennials produce flowers every spring in areas that experience at least six weeks of freezing temperatures.
