Summer Hardscapes 101

Landscape 1

Hardscapes can be a wonderful addition to any garden or yard.

Everyone thinks of landscaping when they think of warm summer months outside, but many people totally forget about the thing that helps them fully enjoy it—hardscaping! If you are planning summer hardscaping projects to help you enjoy your yard throughout the day, here’s what you need to know!

Landscaping vs. Hardscaping
Landscaping typically refers to softscaping, or projects that use flowers, trees,
plants, and vegetation. Hardscaping encompasses solid structures like patios, decks,
and retaining walls. Can you sit on it? It’s part of your hardscaping. Can you eat it?
It’s part of your softscaping and landscaping.
The Main Types of Summer Hardscaping
There are a few core types of summer hardscaping that are popular in backyards
across America. The most common types include:
 Patios: Patios are a great way to add entertaining and social space to your
backyard. Patios are also idea for holding fire features like a fire pit safely
and away from your home. Patios are also a great place to put outdoor
furniture for a nap outside or a relaxing glass of iced tea.
 Retaining walls: These hardscaping features are beautiful and functional.
Retaining walls work by leveling out sloped sections of your yard and can
also be used as a platform for gardening. This is a great way to maximize the
space in your yard and add a touch of elegance and sophistication.
 Wooden decks: Decks are similar to patios, but they typically are larger in
size and sit off of the ground. Decks are also typically more appropriate for
year-round use, so if you enjoy spending time outside decks are your best
bet.
 Walkways: This type of summer landscaping is the best way to enjoy all of
the hard work that you have invested into your landscaping. Whether you
want an easy way to get through your garden, a beautiful winding path to
view all of your flowers, or just a way to get from point A to point B,
walkways are incredibly convenient and useful hardscaping elements to put
into your yard.
What Will You Choose?
The best part of summer hardscaping is incorporating multiple elements into your
yard! Whether you want a patio and a walkway leading through your flowers or a
deck with a retaining wall, hardscaping options are easy to combine and mix and
match.
