Simple Lawn Care Tips To Follow This Winter

lawn maintenance

Learn how to care for your lawn this winter.

The official start of winter is only a few weeks away, which means the weather will be getting worse and worse as the season continues.  You want to ensure that your lawn can survive the frigid temperatures and potentially heavy snow.  Even though your lawn does not require as much maintenance in the winter compared to the other seasons, doesn’t mean you should neglect it.  There are a few simple lawn care tips you can follow this winter so that your lawn is healthy once spring comes around.

Keep Your Lawn Clean and Clear

When it comes caring for your lawn this winter, you want to ensure that it is clean and clear as possible.  Make sure that you get rid of all leaves and debris from of your lawn before a major snowfall arrives. Wet and matted leaves can stunt the growth of your lawn and also be a breeding ground for disease.   So, you can either rake them up or mow over them to create mulch, but only if they are dry. It is also good to prevent leaving furniture out on your lawn during the winter, so you can let your grass breathe.

Prevent Salt Damage

When it comes to melting ice on your property, you want to avoid or reduce the use of rock salt.  The product contains chemicals that are extremely detrimental to your grass and soil, by sucking up all of the moisture.  There are several alternatives to rock salt, such as magnesium chloride and cat litter. If you happen to use rock salt, it is best to flush out the excess salt on your soil with water.

Aerate and Fertilize

One of the most important elements of winter lawn care is aerating and fertilizing your lawn.  Before the first frost on your lawn, you should aerate your lawn, which consists of a tool that pokes holes in your lawn, allowing it breathe before the grass goes dormant.  After you aerate your lawn, you should apply fertilizer in the holes, which supplies your grass with necessary nutrients to survive the winter.
