How to Keep Weeds Out Of Your Garden

RagweedA beautiful garden can only stay beautiful with proper care and maintenance. This means more than just watering, planting, and fertilizing. One of the biggest threats to your garden’s health is a weed. Weeds steal your plants nutrients and suck the life out of them, given their parasitic nature. There are several ways to keep harmful weeds out of your garden.

The traditional way to remove weeds is to pull them. The benefits of this method? You can target just the individual weed plants, rather than using a treatment that will cover your entire garden, and if you are careful to pull them out from the roots, you are guaranteed that that plant will not be growing back. However, there are downsides. Pulling weeds is labor intensive, time-consuming, and you need to be very meticulous in their removal, otherwise you risk missing some that will grow and spread all over again.

Mulching your garden is another way to discourage weed growth as it keeps the soil covered and weed seeds cannot get enough light or nutrients to sprout. However, you need to be cautious when it comes to mulching; only certified mulch is guaranteed not to be contaminated with weed seeds.

You can use herbicides to fully kill off any weeds in your garden. Herbicides both kill existing weeds, as well as prevent seeds from achieving germination. If you want to use herbicides, you’ll need to do a little homework beforehand. Different mixtures are designed to kill different weeds, so it’s important to know what kind of weeds are growing in your garden before applying an herbicide. Herbicides can also contain harmful chemicals that can contribute to runoff contamination when it rains, or pose a threat to your backyard pets, so go organic if possible.
