How To Care For Your Lawn This Fall

Lean how to care for your lawn this fall!

We are approaching the middle of fall, which means it is the perfect time to care for your lawn so that it survives the frigid temperatures of winter.  Fall lawn maintenance focuses on preparing your grass so that it is healthy and luscious once spring comes around.  However, you need to care for your lawn differently during the fall compared to how you are for it in the spring and summer.  Luckily, there are a few simple lawn maintenance tips you can follow during autumn.

Rake It Up

When it comes to caring for your lawn in the fall, you need to be constantly removing the leaves from your grass.  Whether you use a rake or blower, you need to remove the leaves from your lawn before the first snowfall. An excess of leaves on your lawn blocks sunlight from getting your grass and traps moisture.  The last thing you want is for dead grass to be underneath soggy, matted leaves once winter is over.

Know The Height

During the fall, you need to be cutting your grass regularly until the first hard frost makes your lawn dormant.  You should be keeping the height of your grass to around three inches so that your lawn can withstand the winter weather.  If you cut your grass too short, you will do damage to the root system. If you let your grass grow too long, then it will mat and leave your grass vulnerable to fungi and mold.  Mowing throughout the fall gets rid of loose leaves by chopping them up into mulch.

Aerate and Fertilize

It is essential that you loosen up the soil of your lawn and add fertilizer before winter gets here.  Aerating your soil allows the fertilizer and water to go directly to the roots so that it has the most impact.  Fertilizing your lawn during the end of fall allows for your soil to receive necessary plant sugars, which protect the roots from freezing during the winter.  You should use a slow releasing fertilizer so that your grass is healthy once spring arrives.
