You’ve put tons of time into taking care of your shrubs throughout the year, pruning them, and landscaping your entire yard. The last thing you want to do is have all of your hard work go to waste after the weight of winter snow and ice! Winterize your shrubs now to keep them beautiful all winter long.
Windscreen Your Shrubs
One of the best ways to winterize your shrubs is to put up a windscreen, especially if you planted your shrubs within the past six months. Start by getting stakes into the ground to make a frame around the shrubs you need to protect. Next, wrap burlap around the stakes to completely cover the length of the shrubs. Use a staple gun to firmly attach the burlap to the stakes. This is a great budget friendly way to winterize your shrubs.
Protect Your Shrubs from Snow and Ice
Especially in Maryland, the weight of snow and ice can take a huge toll on your landscaping and shrubs. If you have shrubs that are tall and narrow, winterize your shrubs by wrapping them with twine to keep branches close to the trunk. This will prevent thin branches from accumulating a great deal of heavy snow or ice and breaking off the base. Are your shrubs planted close to your home? Make a makeshift shelter for the winter with an A-frame structure made of 2x4s and plywood. That will keep gallons of melted snow and huge falling icicles from ruining all of your hard work (and your shrubs).
Pass the Salt
One of the most common ways to protect driveways, porches, and concrete patches from getting slick in the icy winter is salt. Unfortunately, salt and de-icers can dehydrate your bushes. Use 2×4 stakes and erosion control fabric (a fine mesh that is good at not letting outside matter in) to make a barrier to protect your bushes. While they won’t be as beautiful and exciting to visitors to your home, they will be protected from harsh chemicals.
