Gardening Tips For The Summer Heat

Before winter sneaks up on us, now's the time to get the last of our fall checklist completed.

Learn how to garden in the sweltering heat.

June is finally here which means the start of summer will be here before you know it.  Summer a is great time to get outside and experience nature.  However, with all the beauty summer brings, it can also bring sweltering temperatures.  If you want to venture to your backyard to work in your garden, you need to take the heat into account.  Luckily, there are few simple tips you can follow so that you can have a great garden even in the summer heat.

Be Selective With Plants

When it comes to gardening in the summer, you have to be selective with the plants and produce you choose to grow.  Some plants do well in the heat, and others do not, so you need to do your research. If you are planting flowers and foliage, you should look into growing succulents, hibiscus, and black-eyed Susans, which is the Maryland state flower.  If you want to grow produce for your family to enjoy during the summer, then look into watermelon and cherry tomatoes.

Add Mulch

One of best ways to protect your garden against the summer heat is to apply mulch on top of the soil.  Mulch helps conserve moisture as well as regulating the temperature of the soil. So, if you are experience a drought or very high temperatures, apply straw or pine needles about three inches deep.  Mulch is also a great item to prevent weeds from destroying your garden, so apply as needed during the summer.

Know How To Water

When it comes to watering your garden, it’s all about the frequency not about the quantity of water.  You want to make sure you are giving your garden one inch of water at a time. The last thing you want it to soak your garden and make the soil soggy.  If it is extremely hot outside, then water your garden more times throughout the day. It is essential that you water your garden in the morning so that they get as much moisture as possible before the Sun comes out.
