Creating your Severn Fall Vegetable Garden

Fall CropsJust because Decembers is less than two months away doesn’t mean that Severn residents should give up on their vegetable garden!

You can have a fall vegetable garden right up until the first frost. A successful fall garden just takes a little planning, but the rewards are just as bountiful as they would be in the summer!

Crops for your Severn Fall Vegetable Garden

The trick in planting a fall garden is find the vegetables that offer a quick harvest. You may not be able to grow some of the vegetables you normally like to during the summer, but there is a long list of different seeds you can plant right before frost starts to perform.

These include:

  • Beets
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Carrots
  • Cauliflower
  • Lettuce
  • Spinach
  • Radishes

Fall Garden Vegetables that can Survive Frost

If its cold enough or there is an extreme amount of frost, then any type of vegetable may have trouble growing in your fall garden. But, winters in Severn are fairly predictable. As long as you plan early enough, you can plant vegetables like cabbage, kale and turnips that are known to survive in frost. A lot of the vegetables mentioned above are also suited to handle cold and frost.

Prepare your Fall Vegetable Garden

After you know exactly what you want to plant, make sure to have adequate space for your fall vegetable crops. You will want to remove old and diseased plants or vegetables in your summer garden to make room for the fall. This is also an excellent time to remove weeds so they don’t syphon off moisture for your new crops.

Protect a Fall Vegetable Garden from Frost

Generally, you won’t have as many issues with small animals eating away at your vegetable garden in the fall as you would in the summer. But, the frost will try to destroy all your hard work in just one foul swoop. Protect your vegetable garden by placing old sheets or blankets to offer a safe haven for your vegetables. With just a little bit of planning, you fall vegetable garden can be as rewarding as your summer vegetable garden!
